512 Locksmith has been serving Austin for more than a decade. We help with home and business locks, vehicle keys, lockouts and the door hardware people depend on every day. Choose the situation closest to yours below. Each service page explains the useful options, the details needed for a quote and the limits that matter to that particular job.
For an urgent request, call (512) 777-0021. Dispatch answers 24/7 and can discuss current technician availability. For a planned repair or upgrade, start with the door, vehicle or system you have and the result you want. You do not need to know the failed part's technical name.
Home locks, keys and access
Our residential locksmith services cover home entry, key changes and compatible hardware work. If a key is inside and the door is locked, choose home lockout help. If a key is missing or should no longer work, start with rekeying. Those are different outcomes, even when they are needed at the same visit.
A damaged lock or door deserves an operating assessment as well as an access decision. Rekeying a cylinder will not repair a split frame or a bolt that binds against the strike. Describe any sticking, loose hardware or forced-entry damage so the scope addresses the whole problem.
For a move-in, list the exterior doors and which keys work in them. You may be able to retain sound hardware and simplify the key arrangement. If the property is rented or part of a managed building, have the required permission and existing key-system requirements ready.
Car lockouts, replacement keys and programming
The automotive locksmith services begin with the vehicle year, make and model. Tell us whether any working key remains and whether the vehicle uses a turn-key ignition or push-button start. Different configurations within the same vehicle brand can need different key equipment.
Choose car lockout service for keys in the passenger area, or trunk lockout assistance when the luggage compartment is involved. For a missing or damaged key, replacement-key service covers the supply, cutting and programming required for a supported vehicle.
Electronic recognition and remote functions need separate checks. A transponder key can have a starting-permission issue even when its blade fits the lock. Key-fob programming addresses compatible remote and proximity functions. OEM phone or watch digital keys follow the vehicle manufacturer's separate compatibility and enrollment process.
If the key physically will not turn, see ignition lock and switch help. A mechanical cylinder problem is different from a battery, starter or other vehicle fault that needs an automotive repair shop.
Business locks and managed access
Our commercial locksmith services support the way a business admits staff and visitors while preserving required exit operation. An office lockout calls for authorized entry. A planned master-key system starts with which people need which doors, including how future staff changes will be handled.
For electronic credentials, review access-control systems. Keycards, mobile credentials and connected locks need compatible readers, controllers and management software. Adding a phone credential is a system decision, not simply swapping a handle.
Door closers, panic hardware and electromagnetic locks each affect the complete opening. Have the existing models, building requirements and responsible manager available. A reader that accepts a credential cannot compensate for a dragging door, and an added lock must not interfere with the required way out.
Gate locks, access systems and automatic operators
Our gate services cover mechanical gate hardware, access-control systems and automatic gate installation and repair. Start with the behavior: a latch that will not catch, a credential that is rejected or a gate that begins moving and then stops. Those symptoms call for different checks.
Choose gate locks for latch, cylinder and alignment work; gate access control for readers, keypads, intercoms and permissions; or automatic gate service for the moving system and operator. Keep people clear of a malfunctioning automatic gate. Safety devices and the gate's mechanical condition need assessment before it returns to operation.
Mechanical hardware and smart-lock choices
The lock hardware guide compares deadbolts, mortise assemblies, profile cylinders and smart locks. It also explains when changing a key is enough and when hardware replacement brings a useful improvement.
Model details matter. A Schlage B60-family deadbolt and a Kwikset 980 SmartKey use different key arrangements. An Adams Rite storefront deadlatch needs the appropriate door preparation. Identifying the installed product prevents a familiar brand name from becoming a mistaken parts order.
For connected home entry, compare the features you will use: a keypad, remote guest access, an Apple home key or supported hands-free entry. Matter, Thread, Wi-Fi and wallet credentials are different parts of that decision. Our smart-lock comparison explains the distinctions, and installation planning covers the door fit and handover.
Doors that need repair, installation or replacement
A latch that misses the strike or a deadbolt that needs a hard pull can point to an opening problem. Our door services consider hinges, frame condition and hardware together. A focused repair may keep a sound door in use; damaged or unsuitable material can make replacement more appropriate.
For a planned installation, settle measurements, swing, hardware and responsibility for supply before ordering. A door slab and a prehung unit describe different scopes. Clarify removal, finishing and any work around the opening as part of the proposal.
Overhead garage doors use different equipment. The garage repair and garage installation inquiry pages explain what to provide before supported work is confirmed. Do not assume an ordinary entry-door appointment includes springs, tracks or an opener.
Urgent problems and the next safe step
The emergency locksmith page brings together urgent home, car and business requests. If a person or animal is in immediate danger, call emergency services first. For a damaged property after a suspected crime, follow the appropriate authorities' instructions before altering the scene.
When arranging locksmith help, give the exact location and the current condition. A garage near the Domain needs an entrance and level; a large apartment property needs a building or unit. Say whether the opening is unsecured and whether you are waiting somewhere safer than beside it.
When a job crosses service categories
A move into an older home can involve both rekeying and a door that has started rubbing. Treat those as two related decisions: retire the unwanted keys, then correct the operating fault. A new smart lock should wait until the door closes and the bolt moves properly. That order avoids installing new electronics against an unresolved mechanical problem.
A business changing staff may need to update physical keys, electronic credentials and the people who administer the system. Replacing one cylinder does not remove a former user from a connected platform. List the access methods involved so the plan addresses each one.
For a car with every key missing, opening the door and producing a working replacement belong in the same booking conversation. If the car also has a pre-existing ignition fault, include it. Getting access is useful, but the complete request may be to leave with a vehicle that starts and a spare that performs the agreed functions.
Prepare a quote that matches the job
Photos and model details can help, but the most useful information is often a plain description: the key snapped, the latch no longer catches, the fob starts the car but its buttons do not work. Include changes or earlier repairs that may affect the diagnosis.
Ask what the estimate includes: the visit, assessment, labor, supplied parts and any after-hours charge. A trip fee is not a complete repair price. If inspection reveals additional work, agree on the change before it begins. Our pricing guidance explains the questions worth asking.
For location planning, use the Austin-area location directory. To arrange work, follow the service request steps or call with your details. At handover, test the agreed functions and keep the product information and invoice for future service.
