Blade and start

The key turns. The car still will not start.

A metal blade can fit a lock while the vehicle rejects the electronic key. That is why a newly cut key may open a door without starting the engine. A transponder is the small electronic component the immobilizer recognizes. Remote buttons and push-button starting add other functions, depending on the vehicle.

512 Locksmith helps Austin drivers with compatible transponder keys and key programming. We start with the year, make, model and the keys you have, then identify the required setup. For a lost key that also needs cutting, see car key replacement. This page focuses on recognition, pairing and choosing the right electronic replacement.

Describe what works before replacing anything

Tell us whether the engine cranks, whether a security or key warning appears, and whether another key starts the car. Describe the message as it appears on the dashboard if you can. Those observations help narrow the problem; none is a diagnosis by itself. Battery, wiring, receiver or other vehicle faults can resemble a bad key.

A remote that stops unlocking the doors may have a battery or button problem even when its starting function still works. Likewise, a key that operates the remote locks is not proof that the immobilizer accepts it. The useful question is which function stopped working, and when.

If the blade physically will not turn in the ignition, programming is not the first assumption. A worn key or binding cylinder needs a different assessment. Our ignition lock and switch guidance explains the mechanical and electrical boundary. Avoid forcing the key while deciding whom to call.

Spare or replacement

Adding a spare versus replacing every missing key

Bring all the keys you want to keep using. A spare-key request gives us a working reference, whereas an all-keys-lost request can require additional access and setup. The vehicle's approved procedure determines which existing keys need to be present and what equipment is necessary.

If a key was stolen or cannot be accounted for, mention that specifically. Where supported, electronic keys can be removed from the vehicle's accepted-key memory. Ask which missing-key functions that affects. Electronic deletion and changing mechanical key access are separate decisions, particularly when the missing fob contains a door key.

A newly purchased used car deserves the same conversation. Receiving one working fob does not tell you how many were previously issued. Decide how many active keys you want at handover and keep a record of which ones you received. We can discuss the supported options without promising that every vehicle exposes the same controls.

Choose the key by specification, not appearance

The correct chip and remote specification matter as much as the blade. A compatible-looking shell can contain unsuitable electronics, and a used fob may not be reusable with your vehicle. Aftermarket options vary; the word "replacement" on a listing is not a compatibility test.

Before ordering, gather the vehicle details and any readable part identification on the current key. If a seller requests a choice of frequency, chip type or board version that you cannot identify, stop there and get the specification checked. Guessing can turn one appointment into two.

For a customer-supplied key, agree on what the service covers if it cannot be paired. For a supplied-and-programmed key, ask which functions are included and what support applies to the part. Some vehicle systems require a dealer or another specialist. That is a model-specific limit, not something a longer appointment necessarily fixes.

Programming and handoff

What the programming appointment includes

We verify authorized use of the vehicle and the key specification before work. Keep identification and ownership information available, and let us know if those documents are inside a locked car. For a company vehicle, arrange the responsible person's approval in advance.

The quote should distinguish the physical key or fob, any cutting, programming and the service visit. Diagnosis of an existing vehicle fault can be a separate scope. If you are parked in a downtown garage or a gated lot, share the entrance and level so the technician can reach the vehicle with the necessary equipment.

After setup, the agreed functions need individual checks. Starting, remote locking, trunk operation and an emergency blade are not interchangeable tests. Existing keys that should remain active also need checking. The vehicle manual remains the reference for normal use, battery replacement and any approved backup-start procedure; follow its instructions for your exact model.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Is remote programming the same as transponder programming?

Not always. Remote lock buttons and immobilizer recognition can use separate setup steps. The appointment should cover the functions your particular key and vehicle require.

Do I need to bring my spare keys?

Bring every available key you want to keep using. The vehicle-specific procedure determines which keys must be present, and existing keys should be checked after the work.

Does a security light mean the key is defective?

It is a useful symptom, but not proof. The key, receiver, vehicle power supply or another system fault may be involved. Describe when the warning appears and whether a spare works.

Can you program a secondhand fob?

Some used fobs cannot be reused as supplied. Compatibility, prior programming and the vehicle system need checking before a programming job is accepted.
