First steps

Get somewhere safe while you arrange entry

Stay on the ground and wait somewhere safe, keep children with you and avoid climbing to an upper window or trying to force a door. If you can contact another authorized keyholder, landlord or property manager, a working spare may be the quickest solution.

When you call, say whether the keys are inside, missing or no longer working. Mention a broken key, a smart lock that has stopped responding, or a door that was already difficult to close. Dispatch is available 24 hours a day; the location and current workload determine technician availability and the arrival estimate.

Keys inside, keys missing and a failed lock need different plans

When a working key is simply on the other side of the door, the immediate task is authorized entry. You may not need new hardware. If the key has disappeared somewhere you cannot account for, gaining entry only solves part of the problem. Discuss whether the affected locks should be rekeyed afterward.

A key that will not turn is a different symptom. The cylinder may be damaged, the key may be worn or the bolt may be under pressure from the door. Tell us whether this started suddenly or has been getting worse. That helps the technician prepare for diagnosis rather than treating every call as keys left on the kitchen counter.

Authorized entry

What to have ready when identification is inside

Proof of authority still matters when your wallet is behind the locked door. Explain that situation during the call instead of waiting until arrival. The business can discuss what evidence is appropriate for the property and who else may be able to verify your access, such as a manager or another authorized resident.

The exact evidence depends on the situation. A name on a key ring, knowing the address or having mail delivered there does not settle every access question. We cannot use a lockout visit to decide a dispute between owners, tenants or former occupants. If access is contested, resolve the authorization before arranging physical entry.

Apartments and controlled building entrances

For an apartment, give the unit number and explain how to reach it from the street. A locked lobby, parking gate or elevator access control can prevent a technician from reaching your door even when the street address is correct. Let the property manager know if it controls those areas or requires a particular process.

A downtown parking garage and a house with a driveway need different arrival instructions. Include the useful details, such as the approved visitor entrance or the person meeting the technician. There is no need to explain the whole neighborhood; the right door and a working contact number are what keep the visit moving.

Agree on the entry plan before work starts

The technician assesses the lock and door, explains the proposed approach and discusses any expected effect on the hardware. Some openings allow a less invasive approach; others involve damaged or unfamiliar parts. Do not rely on a blanket promise that every lockout can be solved without a replacement component.

If the approach or price changes after inspection, pause and review the new scope before authorizing it. Ask what happens if entry reveals a separate fault. Opening the door, repairing the cylinder and supplying new keys can be separate items, even when the same technician can address them during the visit.

Scope and next steps

What a lockout quote should cover

Clarify the visit charge, entry labor and any after-hours fee. Say whether more than one lock is engaged, whether the door has visible damage and whether previous attempts were made. Those facts can affect the work. A quote based on a working standard lock may not describe a door with a broken cylinder or damaged frame.

Keep the authorization and invoice with the service details. If you rent, ask the manager about its approval and reimbursement process rather than assuming the locksmith invoice will automatically be covered. For property damage or an immediate safety problem, follow the appropriate emergency or management process first.

Make the next lockout less likely

Once you are inside, check why it happened. A spare-key arrangement may solve a simple mistake. Repeated stiffness, a loose handle or a smart lock that cannot complete its movement needs attention. If the key was lost with identifying information, make key control part of the conversation instead of postponing it indefinitely.

Our rekeying service addresses existing key access, while key duplication helps you plan reliable spares. A smart-lock installation can suit some households, provided the door and backup access are considered. See the residential service guide for the full set of options.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Should I call emergency services or a locksmith?

Call 911 when someone is trapped or there is an immediate threat to life or safety. A locksmith appointment is for restoring authorized access; it is not a substitute for emergency responders. Tell dispatch if the lockout also involves an urgent safety concern.

Can you unlock a rented home?

An authorized rental lockout can be assessed, but the manager may need to approve the work or supply access information. Contact the manager first when possible and tell us what evidence of tenancy or authority is available.

Will I have to replace my lock?

Not necessarily. If the hardware is working and the keys are simply inside, entry may be all you need. A damaged lock or a method that affects a component changes that decision, which should be explained before you approve the work.

Can you give an exact arrival time?

Dispatch can discuss current availability and an estimate for your address. Travel, access to the building and existing work can change timing. Provide a reachable phone number and any gate or parking instructions when you arrange the visit.
