Functions first

Make the remote do the job you expect

Your car starts, but the lock buttons no longer work. Or you have a replacement proximity fob that the car does not recognize. Those are useful descriptions for a key-fob programming call. 512 Locksmith helps Austin drivers with compatible remote and smart-key setup, beginning with the exact vehicle and the functions that need attention.

Give us the year, make and model, whether it has push-button start, and whether another fob still works. If you already bought a remote, have its part details ready. We identify the supported scope before booking so a remote-button problem does not automatically become a complete key replacement.

Remote buttons, proximity access and starting permission

A remote can command door locks or a luggage-compartment release. A proximity system can recognize a compatible fob near the vehicle. Starting authorization is another function. They may live in one device, but successful operation of one does not prove that all the others are working.

This matters at testing time. A remote that flashes its light is showing you that something happened inside the remote; it is not proof that the car received or accepted the command. Equally, a fob that starts the engine may still have a failed button or a remote-entry issue.

Make a short list of what works: door buttons, trunk button, normal proximity entry and starting. Include remote start only if the vehicle already has that feature. Programming a replacement fob does not add equipment or factory options the vehicle never had.

Check the fob

A weak battery can resemble a bigger fault

Reduced range, intermittent buttons or a battery warning are reasons to check the remote against the vehicle manual. A damaged shell, worn button or water exposure can also matter. Tell us whether the problem followed a battery change, a drop or a repair, and keep the original remote available.

Use the battery type and orientation specified for that exact fob. Do not assume that replacing a coin cell always erases programming, or that every unresponsive fob only needs a battery. If a properly specified battery does not resolve the problem, further assessment is more useful than repeatedly opening the case.

For normal owner maintenance, see our key-fob battery guide. Follow the vehicle maker's approved backup-start instructions if needed. Those instructions vary by model; online advice for another car may be unhelpful.

Check a replacement remote before paying to pair it

Matching button icons and case shape are not enough. The vehicle configuration and the remote's electronic specification must match. Previously used remotes can carry restrictions, and an online seller's broad model list may leave out differences between years or markets.

Send the part number or product listing through the agreed contact method before purchasing when possible. If you already own the part, keep its packaging and return information. We can discuss a customer-supplied remote, but an incompatible or unusable device may need replacement rather than more programming time.

A factory remote and an aftermarket alarm remote may control different systems. Tell us about any added alarm or remote-start equipment. Pairing an original-equipment fob is not automatically a repair for an aftermarket controller, and the installer or product specialist may need to be involved.

Pairing and testing

Phone and watch car keys are a separate system

Some vehicles support an OEM digital key on a compatible phone or watch. That feature depends on the vehicle, device, software and manufacturer's enrollment process. It is different from programming a physical fob. A car supporting one kind of digital access does not automatically support every phone or wallet.

The Car Connectivity Consortium's certified-product showcase illustrates how digital-key support is tied to specific products. Use the vehicle maker's current instructions to check your own setup. Account recovery, ownership transfer or wallet enrollment may require the manufacturer or dealer. Our fob-programming service does not promise to provision OEM digital keys.

Define the appointment by functions, then test them

For a spare remote, bring the existing fobs you want to retain and have authorized-use documents ready. Tell us if a missing fob should no longer work. The vehicle's supported procedure determines how keys are added or removed and which existing devices need to be present.

The price depends on whether you need a supplied fob, pairing alone, an emergency blade or fault diagnosis. Agree on the included functions and what happens if the supplied part cannot be used. A device with more buttons is not necessarily a more capable replacement for your particular car.

After setup, check the agreed controls and starting function with the technician, including the existing fobs that should remain active. If you need a complete key supplied and cut, choose car key replacement. For a blade that turns but a chip the car rejects, see transponder key help.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Does replacing a fob battery always require programming?

No. Follow the manufacturer instructions for the exact remote. A continuing fault after correct battery replacement needs assessment rather than an assumption that pairing was lost.

Can programming add remote start to my car?

Pairing a fob does not add hardware or factory features the vehicle lacks. Remote-start support depends on the vehicle and any installed system.

Can you set up a phone or watch as my car key?

OEM digital-key enrollment is separate from physical fob programming. Use the vehicle manufacturer process for supported devices; manufacturer or dealer assistance may be needed.

Why does my fob start the car but not unlock its doors?

Remote entry and starting authorization can work separately. Battery, buttons, remote electronics or a vehicle-side fault may be involved, so describe each function independently.
