The key you need

Lost the only key, or ready for a spare?

That is the first distinction we make on a car key call. With a working key in your hand, we can identify what it does and plan a spare. When every key is missing, the job may also involve gaining access, establishing the correct key specification and setting up the vehicle to recognize a replacement. Tell us which situation you are in before buying a fob or arranging a tow.

512 Locksmith provides car key replacement in Austin as part of our automotive locksmith service. Share the year, make and model, whether it uses a turn-key ignition or push-button start, and where the car is parked. We check that particular vehicle's requirements before quoting the work. A familiar badge on the grille does not mean every model year uses the same key.

What actually needs replacing?

A traditional key is a cut metal blade. A transponder key also contains an electronic chip that the vehicle must recognize. A remote-head key combines buttons and a blade, while a proximity fob supports keyless operation on compatible vehicles. Some fobs also contain a separate emergency blade. These parts perform different jobs, even when they share one plastic case.

A broken button or cracked shell does not automatically mean the whole key has failed. Tell us whether the vehicle still starts and which remote functions still work. Keep the damaged key and any loose pieces; identifying the original is more useful than guessing from a photograph of a similar replacement online.

If you can unlock the car but it will not recognize the key, read our transponder key and programming page. Cutting a blade and registering an electronic key are separate tasks. A replacement needs the functions you use, not just a matching shape.

Check compatibility

Why an online fob needs a compatibility check

Two remotes can look identical and have different electronics. The part number, vehicle configuration and key system matter. A used or previously paired fob may have restrictions that a new one does not. Buying the cheapest listing first can leave you paying for a part that cannot be used on your car.

If you already have a replacement, give us its listing or packaging details before the visit. We can discuss whether customer-supplied hardware is appropriate and what happens if it is incompatible. Keep the return window in mind. A programming appointment does not turn an unsuitable part into the correct one.

Manufacturer-specific restrictions sometimes make an authorized dealer the appropriate route. We explain that when the vehicle details point that way. The useful comparison is the complete working-key solution, including any towing or access work, rather than the advertised price of an uncut fob.

What affects the replacement cost

A spare for a supported vehicle with a working key is a different scope from an all-keys-lost job. The key type, required programming, emergency blade, number of replacements and condition of the existing locks affect the quote. A damaged ignition or previous lock replacement may add a separate problem that a new key alone will not solve.

Before authorizing work, get the total scope clear: service visit, key or fob, cutting, programming and testing. If you want two working keys, say so at the start. Also discuss any missing-key deletion the vehicle supports. Removing a key's electronic starting permission does not necessarily change a mechanical door lock that its blade still fits.

Prepare and test

Getting the right vehicle and person together

Have photo identification and evidence that you own or are authorized to use the vehicle. If the registration is locked inside, mention it when calling so verification can be planned. A borrowed, leased, rental or company vehicle may involve another authorized person. It is better to resolve that before the appointment.

For a parking garage near the Domain or downtown, give the level, entrance and clearance information as well as the street address. At a large apartment property, add the building number or nearest marked parking area. If you have moved away from the car to wait somewhere safer, tell dispatch where to meet you. These details help us locate the job; they do not change the vehicle's programming requirements.

The finished key should do the agreed job

Test the replacement with the technician before leaving. That means checking the intended mechanical lock, starting function and supported remote buttons, rather than accepting a fob simply because its indicator light flashes. Test any existing keys that are meant to remain active as well. Keep the new spare somewhere separate from your everyday key.

If a correct key still binds or will not turn, the cylinder needs attention. Our ignition repair page explains that distinction. Call (512) 777-0021 with your vehicle details to arrange replacement-key help. Dispatch answers 24/7 and will give you current availability.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can you replace a car key when I have no original?

We provide replacement-key help for supported vehicles, including all-keys-lost requests. The year, model and key system determine the available method and whether specialist or dealer involvement is needed.

Will a new fob also include a mechanical key?

That depends on the product and quote. If your vehicle uses an emergency blade, include its supply and cutting in the discussion rather than assuming it comes ready to use.

Does deleting a lost fob stop its metal key opening the door?

Not necessarily. Electronic key registration and the mechanical door lock are separate. Discuss both if the missing key presents an access concern.

Can a damaged key shell be repaired instead?

Sometimes the usable electronics can be retained, but the condition and replacement shell must be checked. Bring the original key before deciding on a complete replacement.
