Choose the work

Choose a lock around the door and the job it has to do

The right lock is not always the newest model or the most expensive one on the shelf. It needs to fit the opening, operate reliably and give the right people access. 512 Locksmith has been serving Austin for more than a decade, helping customers work through those decisions for homes and businesses.

Compare mechanical lock types, rekey-versus-replacement decisions and smart-lock features. If you already know the service you need, follow the relevant page below. If the hardware is unfamiliar, call (512) 777-0021 with the visible markings and a description of the problem.

Start with the question you are trying to answer

Should I change the key or the whole lock?

Our lock change versus rekey guide separates access concerns from worn or unsuitable hardware. If a sound lock needs to stop accepting an old key, rekeying may be enough. If the latch is broken or the function needs to change, replacement may be more useful.

A mixed plan is often worth considering. You might retain and rekey several suitable locks while replacing one damaged or incompatible unit. A door-by-door list makes that discussion much clearer than a blanket request to change everything.

Which deadbolt fits this entrance?

Deadbolt installation and repair starts with the door thickness, existing preparation, strike and required inside operation. A bolt that works only when you pull hard on the door may be meeting an alignment problem that new hardware alone will not fix.

Recognizable mechanical choices include the Schlage B60 family and Kwikset 980 SmartKey. They are examples for a product discussion, with different specifications and key arrangements. A particular model should be selected against the opening rather than substituted by brand alone.

What is inside this older or commercial lock?

A mortise lock has its main case fitted into a pocket in the door. The case, cylinder and trim can need different repairs. Correct dimensions, handing and operating function matter when identifying a replacement.

On an older Austin entry, keeping sound trim may avoid unnecessary cosmetic changes. On a commercial opening, the inside and outside functions may be more important than appearance. Either way, identify the assembly before ordering a standard lock that may not fit the existing preparation.

Does this door use a profile cylinder?

Profile-cylinder service covers the correctly sized key cylinder and its relationship with the lock mechanism. Internal and external lengths may differ. A cylinder that projects incorrectly or operates an incompatible mechanism is not a suitable replacement.

Multipoint doors need the wider mechanism considered too. If the handle or locking points bind, replacing the cylinder may not solve the fault. Describe whether the problem occurs with the door open, closed or both.

Which smart features will I actually use?

Our smart-lock comparison explains keypad access, apps, Matter-over-Thread connectivity, wallet keys and hands-free features. A standalone keypad can suit a simple household request. Remote user management or phone/watch credentials require a more specific compatibility check.

Schlage Encode Plus, Schlage Sense Pro and Aqara U400 illustrate why model names matter. Apple home-key support and UWB hands-free entry are distinct features, with device and setup requirements. A brand name or general smart-home logo does not establish that the function you want is included.

02

Fit and access

Common problems that a new lock will not solve by itself

A damaged frame cannot reliably support hardware just because the cylinder is new. A sagging door can keep loading a bolt or latch. A closer that fails to bring the door into position can make an access-control lock appear unreliable. Inspect the opening as a working assembly.

Tell us about rubbing, gaps, water damage, loose trim or unusual force needed to operate the door. Those observations belong in the quote request. Our door services cover the surrounding repair, installation and replacement decisions.

A key-access change is also distinct from an operating repair. Rekeying may retire an old key, but it does not restore a broken latch. Removing an app user does not change a mechanical key that still fits. Plan each access method that needs to change.

Think about the people who use the opening

A household entrance, a shared apartment door and a business exit have different requirements. Consider who needs ordinary access, who manages the keys or credentials and how people leave the building. Inside operation should remain clear and suitable for the opening.

For a managed or rented property, get the required approval before replacing hardware. Existing master keys, fire labels or building specifications may affect the choice. Commercial hardware changes should preserve required exit and accessibility functions; a product rating alone does not establish compliance of the finished opening.

If different users need access to different groups of doors, a planned master-key system or electronic access system may be more appropriate than putting one common key everywhere. The access plan should come before the parts order.

Model and quote

Read the full model label before comparing prices

A product family can include several functions, cylinder options and connectivity packages. Record the complete model number and any included module, rather than only the name printed most prominently on the box. A keyed and key-free version, or a Bluetooth and Wi-Fi package, can lead to different installation and backup-entry decisions.

For an existing lock, keep original instructions or invoices if available. They can identify parts that are hidden after installation. When replacing just one component, compatibility with the retained case, trim and key system matters more than matching the exterior finish.

If two quotes specify different products, compare the intended function and included fitting work before comparing totals. Ask what practical difference the proposed upgrade makes on your opening. A clear answer should relate to fit, operation, access management or the documented product specification.

Bring the product details into the quote

Photos of the visible lock, door edge and frame help identify the assembly. Include the brand and model where readable, door material, symptoms and reason for changing it. If you have purchased a replacement, share its specification before the appointment.

The total depends on the hardware, fitting, keying and any repair needed around it. Clarify who supplies parts and whether finishing or connected-system setup is included. A compatible part available for an ordinary replacement can be a different project from a conversion requiring new preparation.

At handover, test the agreed inside and outside functions with the door open and closed. Check every retained or new key that should work, and verify any electronic features included in the job. Keep the model details for future maintenance.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can a new lock fix a door that will not line up?

The door and strike need assessment first. New hardware can meet the same resistance if the hinges, frame or alignment remain faulty.

Should I buy a lock before booking installation?

Share the proposed model and current opening first. The door preparation and intended function may rule out a product that looks suitable in a listing.

Do Matter and Apple home-key support mean the same thing?

No. Smart-home interoperability, wallet credentials and hands-free entry are separate features with model and device requirements.

Can several existing locks use one key?

Compatible cylinders may be keyed alike. List the current locks and desired access groups so the technician can identify what can stay and what would need to change.
