Operation and options

A deadbolt should work without a shoulder against the door

If you have to lift the handle, pull the door toward you or lean on it before the bolt turns, the lock may be only part of the problem. Door position, hinges and the strike opening affect how the bolt travels. Installing a new deadbolt into the same misaligned opening can leave you with the same daily struggle.

512 Locksmith installs, repairs and replaces compatible deadbolt hardware in Austin. We look at the door and frame as well as the lock, then recommend the work that addresses the fault. For an overview of other lock types, see our lock hardware guide.

Rekey a sound lock or replace worn hardware?

If the deadbolt operates smoothly and the concern is who has an old key, rekeying may be enough. It changes the key that works in a compatible cylinder while retaining the usable lock. A move, lost key or change in household access does not automatically call for new hardware on every door.

A broken bolt, damaged housing or unsuitable lock function is a different reason for work. Those issues can justify repair or replacement. If the frame around the strike is split, replacing only the cylinder will not restore a sound fixing point. The assessment should include the material holding the lock in place.

Our rekey-versus-replacement comparison helps separate access changes from hardware problems. You can combine work where it makes sense, such as replacing one worn lock and rekeying compatible sound locks to the agreed key.

Door fit and exit

Match the lock to the existing door

A deadbolt is not selected by finish alone. Door thickness, the distance from the edge to the lock's center, existing holes, faceplate shape and available inside clearance affect the fit. A metal door, narrow stile or previously altered opening may need different preparation from a typical wood entry door.

Manufacturer templates give the dimensions for a specific product. For example, Schlage's deadbolt installation guidance emphasizes prepared, aligned openings and smooth operation after fitting. That does not make every Schlage model, or any other brand, interchangeable with the lock already on your door.

If you have already bought hardware, keep the box and model number available. We can check the proposed fit before drilling or modifying the door. For a new deadbolt where no opening exists, discuss placement and door suitability before treating the job as a simple swap.

The Schlage B60 family and Kwikset 980 SmartKey are examples of mechanical deadbolts worth identifying by model. The 980 SmartKey uses its own rekeying system and compatible keyway. That does not make it interchangeable with a Schlage cylinder or suitable for every existing key plan.

Inside operation matters as much as the outside key

Think about who uses the door and how they leave in a hurry. A thumbturn, keyed inside cylinder and electronic control produce different operating arrangements. Hardware on an exit route must preserve the required way out. The correct choice depends on the opening and applicable building requirements.

Do not add an inside-keyed lock solely because there is nearby glass without discussing safe exit operation. A rental, multifamily building or commercial opening can have requirements beyond the homeowner's preferred appearance. We assess the intended function before recommending hardware; a new lock should not create an exit problem.

A deadbolt also does a different job from the spring latch operated by a handle. Our deadbolt and deadlatch guide explains the distinction. The two should be considered together when deciding how the door will close, latch and lock.

Upgrade and quote

Keyed alike, stronger hardware or smart access?

If you want one key for several doors, list the existing lock brands and which keys currently work where. Compatible cylinders may be keyed alike, but similar-looking keys are not proof that every lock can share one. Sometimes changing a cylinder or one lock is enough to simplify the arrangement.

For a security upgrade, consider the whole opening: the door, frame, hinges, strike and chosen lock. A stronger cylinder does not repair weak surrounding material. Ask what a product's rating applies to and whether the proposed installation preserves that configuration.

If you want keypad or app access, decide which features are useful before choosing an electronic deadbolt. Door alignment remains important because the mechanism must move normally. Some products replace the full deadbolt; others retrofit compatible hardware. Product fit and user needs should drive the choice.

What is included in a deadbolt quote?

Replacing a like-for-like lock, preparing a new opening and repairing a damaged frame involve different work. The hardware model, number of doors, keying requirements and existing condition affect the total. Tell us about sticking, looseness or damage even if you mainly want a new finish.

The scope should identify the supplied lock, installation, any door or strike work, rekeying and number of keys. Clarify whether painting or cosmetic finishing remains for another trade. After fitting, test both inside and outside operation with the door open and closed. It should operate normally without pulling the door into position.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can you add a deadbolt where there is no existing hole?

A new opening requires checking the door material, dimensions and suitable location. That preparation is a different scope from replacing a deadbolt in an existing compatible opening.

Why does my deadbolt work only when I pull on the door?

The bolt may be meeting resistance at the strike because the door or frame is out of alignment. The hardware and surrounding opening need checking together.

Can the new deadbolt use my existing house key?

Sometimes. The cylinder and keyway must be compatible with the intended key system. Share the existing lock details before selecting replacement hardware.

Should I use a key on the inside of the deadbolt?

Inside operation must suit the opening and its exit requirements. Discuss the door and building use before choosing a double-key cylinder.
