Stop and assess

A broken key does not always mean a broken lock

The useful question is what happened just before the key snapped. Was it already bent? Did the lock feel stiff for weeks? Did you have to pull the door toward you to turn it? Those details help separate a worn key from a cylinder fault or a door that puts pressure on the bolt. Removing the metal is one part of the job; finding the cause reduces the chance of breaking the replacement.

512 Locksmith handles residential broken-key requests in Austin. Tell us whether the door is open, closed or your only available entrance. A fragment in an unlocked back door can be planned differently from a front door that has left you outside. For a person trapped or in immediate danger, call 911 first.

Stop before the fragment moves farther in

Do not insert another key, glue something to the broken piece or twist it with household tools. That can move the fragment or add a second problem inside the cylinder. Avoid spraying a mixture of lubricants into the lock. The appropriate product and method depend on the hardware, and the technician needs to see its current condition.

Put the loose portion of the key somewhere safe. A spare that still works is useful too, but do not test it while a fragment remains in the keyway. If you have already tried a tool or product, mention it. That information helps identify any additional damage.

Choose the work

What the assessment should establish

The first checks concern the type of lock, the position of the broken key and any visible damage. A fragment near the front of a familiar cylinder presents a different job from a piece trapped in damaged hardware. The technician can explain the proposed extraction method and what changes if the lock cannot be restored.

Door position matters. A lock that turns freely with the door open but binds against the frame needs attention to the opening as well as the key. Older hardware, a loose handle or a strike that no longer lines up can change the repair plan. The repaired door should work normally; you should not have to teach everyone a special lift-and-pull routine.

Extraction, repair or replacement

Extraction may be enough when the cylinder is sound and the failure came from the key. A damaged or badly worn cylinder may need repair or replacement. If the concern also involves missing keys, rekeying the lock is a separate decision: extraction alone does not stop an old key from working.

A new key should come from a suitable source. Copying a worn key can carry the same problem into the next copy, so the technician should evaluate the available key and hardware before cutting. If the original is missing or too damaged to use, ask what information or further work is needed. There is no promise that every lock can be recovered in the same way.

Quote and test

What changes the quote

The quote can include the visit, extraction labor, gaining entry if the door is locked, and any new key or cylinder work. Ask which of those items are included. Accessibility, the lock design, previous attempts and damaged parts can affect the time and materials involved. An extraction quote and a complete replacement quote should not be treated as the same scope.

For a rental, contact the manager before authorizing changes to shared or controlled hardware. Have identification and evidence of your authority available. When the work involves an apartment entrance behind a controlled building door, explain how the technician will reach your unit and who can approve the work.

Before the door goes back into use

Ask to see the replacement key operate normally and check the door in the positions relevant to the repair. A successful extraction should lead to a clear handoff: what was removed, whether another fault was found, what was repaired and which keys now work. Keep the new spare separately rather than on the same ring as the everyday key.

If there is no fragment and the key is simply inside the home, home lockout service is the better starting point. For planned work on several doors, see our residential locksmith services. Call (512) 777-0021 with the address and what happened; dispatch is available 24 hours a day, with technician timing confirmed for your request.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can the lock stay in place during extraction?

Sometimes. The lock design, door position and location of the fragment determine whether parts need to be removed. Ask the technician to explain the approach before work begins, including any change to the quote if access to the cylinder is more involved.

Will I need a new lock?

A broken key alone does not answer that. If the cylinder works correctly after removal, replacing the entire lock may be unnecessary. Damage inside the cylinder or a separate hardware failure can make repair or replacement the sensible option.

Can you make a replacement from the broken key?

Keep both pieces, but do not assume they are a reliable cutting pattern. A working spare, available key information and the condition of the lock help determine the appropriate replacement method. Restricted keys may require additional authorization.

What if the key broke in a car ignition?

Tell dispatch that it is a vehicle problem and provide the year, make and model. This page covers residential locks; ignition hardware and vehicle keys require a different assessment and capability check.
