Key duplication in Austin

A spare should work as easily as the key you use every day. We help identify the key type, check whether the original is a sound pattern and plan copies for the doors you actually need.

Start with the key

Make the spare while you still have a good key

A planned duplicate lets you choose a reliable source key and check the copy at the actual lock. It also gives you time to decide who needs access, instead of making that decision during a lockout.

Tell 512 Locksmith whether the key is for a house door, apartment, gate, cabinet or another lock. A similar-looking blank is not necessarily compatible. If the request is for a vehicle key, use our automotive service pages; a metal blade, transponder and remote can involve different work from a residential key copy.

The original can explain a bad copy

If the original already needs jiggling, a duplicate is unlikely to solve the underlying problem. Wear on the key, an old imperfect copy or a fault in the cylinder can all affect operation. Bring the best working key you have and say whether it works smoothly in every intended lock.

A copy made from another copy may reproduce an existing error. That does not mean every second-generation key fails, but it is a reason to evaluate the pattern rather than cut several more keys blindly. If all available keys behave badly, the cylinder and door need attention before you order a batch of spares.

Copy and test

Identify the key and the permission to copy it

The shape of the keyway, the blank profile and the lock system determine the options. Standard residential keys are a different request from controlled or restricted keys. Certain systems require an authorization card, an approved signatory or the original provider. A label on the head alone does not establish the complete policy for that product.

For an apartment or managed community, ask the property manager about its key system. A unit key may be separate from the building entrance, mailbox and garage access device. Duplicating one does not necessarily give the recipient the full access you intended. Keep those permissions clear before you hand a key to a guest or service provider.

Decide how many people need keys

A household spare plan can be simple: an everyday key for each authorized person and a backup kept somewhere accessible to the right person. Avoid storing every copy on the same key ring or leaving the only spare inside the locked home. Consider how someone would obtain the backup when you are away.

For a cleaner, house sitter or contractor, think about when access should end. A physical key can be returned, but you may not know whether another copy was made. If that uncertainty matters, discuss rekeying or a suitable managed code on a smart lock. More duplicates are not the answer to every access problem.

Test the copy where it will be used

The handoff should include a practical check, not just a visual comparison of the cuts. Test each intended cylinder without forcing the key. A house key may operate the front deadbolt smoothly and reveal a problem at a rarely used side door. That distinction helps determine whether the issue belongs to the copy or the particular lock.

Check normal insertion, turning and removal. If the key catches, stop and explain what you felt. Do not bend the new key or file it at home to make it work. Keep the original until the copies have been checked and everyone who needs a key has received the right one.

Scope and next step

What affects availability and cost

The key blank, system restrictions, condition of the original and number of copies affect the job. A mobile visit can involve a different service charge from a counter copy. Call before planning a trip; our listed Bee Cave Road address is a mailing address and should not be treated as confirmed walk-in key-cutting availability.

Have the type of lock, any readable brand marking and the number of requested keys ready. Do not publish a clear photo of your key cuts or key-system identification online. Dispatch can explain what information is appropriate for the service request and how to provide it without putting access details in a public post.

When there is no key left

A lost-original request is different from duplication. The technician needs to establish authority and assess the lock before explaining how a new key or new keying can be provided. If a lost key could still be used by someone else, restoring a copy alone leaves that access unchanged.

Call (512) 777-0021 for a residential key request. If you cannot enter the property, start with home lockout help. For other planned work, our residential locksmith services connects key copying with rekeying, repairs and new access hardware.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can you copy a key marked do not duplicate?

The actual key system and authorization requirements matter. Tell us about the marking and who controls the lock. Restricted systems may need approval or an authorized provider; do not assume a stamped phrase is the only restriction.

Why does my copy work in one lock but not another?

One cylinder may be worn or use different keying, or the copy may be marginal. Test with the original at both locks and explain the difference. A key or lock assessment is more useful than forcing the copy until it turns.

Can a broken key be duplicated?

Keep both pieces and any working spare. A damaged key may not provide a reliable pattern, so the technician needs to assess the available information. If part remains inside the lock, extraction and diagnosis come before trying another key.

Does making a spare stop a lost key from working?

No. A duplicate preserves the existing access. To prevent the lost key from operating a compatible cylinder, discuss rekeying or another appropriate change to the lock system.
