Managing Access for Main Houses and Guest Units
If your Bouldin Creek property includes a main home and a separate unit, their keys should reflect who uses each space. When you rent out the back unit or host short-term guests, managing access becomes a structural decision. You need a system that restricts guest access to their specific building while allowing you, the property owner, convenient entry to both spaces.
Sharing the same operating key gives both doors the same access. Separate keys or a planned master key system can provide different permissions. We can assess a system that gives an authorized owner broader access while limiting other keys to assigned doors. When access changes, a rekey needs to follow that system's plan and records. We check which keys should continue working before changing cylinders.
If you want to keep an older door's handles and backplates, include that in the repair discussion. If a lock stops functioning reliably or you lose control of the keys, you do not necessarily have to abandon the original handles and backplates. As long as the internal cylinder uses a standard, compatible format, a locksmith can rekey the mechanism to a new operating key without altering the door's exterior appearance.
By rekeying compatible cylinders, previous operating keys can be excluded from the serviced cylinders according to the agreed plan. If the hardware is failing mechanically, such as a latch that no longer retracts smoothly when the knob turns, we evaluate the internal components before suggesting a full replacement. Sometimes the mechanism simply needs professional servicing, while other times decades of wear dictate a hardware upgrade.
