Start with the home you live in. A shared entrance, an older timber door and a gate set back from the road each need a different assessment. This guide organizes a property check by those features; it does not rank Austin neighborhoods by crime.

Moving into a new Austin property

After a move, find out who still has a key. Rekeying a suitable cylinder makes the old keys stop operating it while retaining the existing hardware. Damaged locks may need repair or replacement instead. For smart locks, review codes and account access separately; a changed physical key does not revoke electronic users.

Observation Recommended action Reason
You just moved in and the locks work smoothly. Assess compatible cylinders for rekeying. Cancels old keys while keeping functional hardware on the door.
You want one key to open the front, back and side doors. Assess compatible cylinders for rekeying. As long as the locks share a compatible keyway, they can be keyed alike.
The lock is difficult to turn, rusty or feels loose inside the door. Compare repair, replacement or an appropriate retrofit. Rekeying only changes the pins. It does not fix mechanical wear in the latch or bolt mechanism.
You want to upgrade from a standard deadbolt to a keypad lock. Compare repair, replacement or an appropriate retrofit. Some products replace the deadbolt; others retrofit compatible existing hardware. Check the exact door and product.

Downtown and urban core condos

Condominiums and apartments in high traffic areas face specific security variables. Shared access points, parking garages and lobbies mean multiple people enter and exit the building daily. If you rent or own a condo, verify that your unit door closes and locks properly without you having to pull it hard or lift the handle. While the building management handles exterior doors and shared amenities, your own door hardware remains your primary boundary.

Property managers often enforce rules regarding what hardware can be installed on exterior-facing unit doors. Ask your management office about the policy for adding a secondary lock or changing the core before scheduling work. They may require a specific keyway so their emergency master key continues to function. When receiving packages, use secure lockers or require a signature rather than leaving deliveries in open hallways. If your mail compartment uses a private cluster box, you or the building management control that lock. If the carrier opens the entire panel with a postal key, the US Postal Service controls that access.

Older door hardware in east and south Austin

An older door in East or South Austin may need its existing lock identified before you choose a replacement. Do not assume its age, address or appearance tells you its security rating. Check the lock function, condition and door preparation.

With the door open, check whether the deadbolt extends freely. Then check ordinary closed-door operation without forcing it. If you need to push or lift the door to turn the key, the opening needs assessment. Strike reinforcement and fasteners must suit the frame and manufacturer instructions; a universal screw length is not an installation plan.

New-home handover and association requirements

At a newer home in North Austin, Round Rock or Pflugerville, check the same basics: smooth closure, full bolt travel and who holds the keys. New hardware can still be poorly adjusted. Review keys and any construction or guest codes at handover rather than assuming recent installation means access is private.

If an association or manager controls exterior appearance, check its rules before changing trim. For a smart lock, assess the door fit and the exact backup-entry method. A motor should not have to overcome a binding bolt. Follow the model's battery and maintenance instructions.

West Austin, isolated properties and gate security

For a West Austin or Lake Travis-area property set back from the street, include gates and detached spaces in the access check. Assess exposed hardware for wear and suitable environmental ratings. A gate that blocks the service entrance also needs an authorized access plan when you arrange work.

A restricted key system can limit where authorized copies are obtained. Ask about the actual keyway, duplication policy and replacement-key availability. It is not a promise that no copy can ever be made. For remote monitoring, distinguish lock-bolt status from door position: an extended bolt does not prove the door is shut.

Shared property gate

Shared entrances need their own access review apart from the home's main lock.

The property walk-through

Include sliding doors and windows in the walk-through. Check that each closes, latches and locks as designed. Any secondary device must suit that opening and preserve required escape; avoid adding a pin or bar solely because it fits.

Add motion-sensor lighting around entryways and keep bushes trimmed below window level. This removes shadows where someone could stand unseen. Before traveling, test all your locks and window latches. Stop your mail delivery and use timers on interior lights to make the house appear occupied.

Walk the property in a useful order

  1. Main entrances

Check closure, bolt travel and who holds keys.

  2. Shared access

Record manager-controlled doors, gates and credentials.

  3. Secondary openings

Look at windows, sliding doors and detached spaces.

Vehicle and garage security

Vehicle break-ins happen in parking garages, driveways and street parking across the city. Remove visible valuables from the cabin, including bags that might appear to contain something valuable. Always lock your doors, even when parked in a residential garage. Keep a garage remote with you when practical. If you leave your car parked on the driveway, a visible remote clipped to the visor provides direct access to your garage and potentially the door leading into your house. If a remote goes missing, follow the opener manufacturer instructions to erase the memory and remove its access rather than only buying another remote.

Common neighborhood security questions

What should i do if i lose my house keys?

Consider where the keys were lost and what they open, then discuss rekeying the affected cylinders. For an electronic credential, removal depends on the system and may leave a mechanical blade usable. Review each access method rather than assuming a single reset handles everything.

Can i add a deadbolt to my apartment door?

Check the lease, authorized manager and door requirements before altering an apartment entrance. Existing master-key access or a rated door can affect what changes are suitable.

How do i know if my door is secure against kicking?

Have the complete opening assessed: door, hinges, frame, strike and fasteners. Suitable reinforcement can improve resistance, but its design and installation must match the structure. No screw length or lock alone makes a door force-proof.

Does a smart lock make my house safer?

A smart lock can improve control of codes and authorized users if the selected model supports the features you need. It is not automatically stronger than a mechanical deadbolt. Access logs record credential activity, not conclusive proof of who entered.
