Safety and assessment

Deal with immediate safety before repairs

If a break-in may be in progress or someone is in immediate danger, call 911 and stay somewhere safe. Do not enter to inspect a lock while the situation is uncertain. Follow the responding authority's directions about the scene and when repair work can begin.

When it is appropriate to arrange service, tell 512 Locksmith which opening is damaged and whether the door can close. Mention broken glass, exposed sharp edges or an opening that cannot currently be secured. That gives dispatch a useful starting point and helps distinguish urgent securing from a planned hardware replacement.

Inspect the whole opening

Forced entry can damage more than the visible cylinder. The door edge, frame, strike area, hinges and mounting points may also be affected. A new lock installed onto damaged supporting material can leave the original weakness unresolved. The assessment should establish what is sound and what needs repair by the appropriate trade.

Describe what you can see without dismantling anything. A door that hangs crooked, a strike torn away from the frame and a key that no longer turns point to different work. If photographs are needed for the property owner or insurer, take them only when it is safe and permitted to do so.

Secure and restore

Temporary securing and permanent restoration

Sometimes the immediate priority is a usable, secured opening while replacement parts or door work are arranged. That temporary step should be described honestly, including any remaining limitations. Do not treat an emergency measure as a finished repair simply because the door can be pulled shut.

Permanent restoration may involve lock hardware, the door or frame, or work outside a locksmith's agreed scope. Ask who is responsible for each part and in what order it should happen. Fitting a replacement lock before the damaged opening is corrected can create another round of adjustment later.

Decide what should be replaced

A damaged cylinder or broken lock body may need replacement. Other hardware may be reusable after inspection, but appearance alone is not enough to decide. Ask the technician to explain why a component is being kept or changed and whether the proposed replacement is suitable for that door.

If keys were taken or could have been copied, include key control in the repair plan. Rekeying addresses compatible cylinders that should no longer accept the old key. It does not repair torn-out hardware or a split frame, so the quote may need to cover both access control and physical damage.

Avoid upgrades that solve the wrong problem

After a break-in, buying the most expensive lock can feel like the obvious next step. Start with the condition of the door and how the opening is used. The lock, strike and supporting structure need to work together. An upgrade should address a specific weakness and allow normal, appropriate exit from inside.

This is also a chance to look at a neglected secondary entrance, but keep that separate from the urgent repair decision. You should be able to approve the work needed to secure the affected opening without being pressured into a whole-house package. Door repair services may be relevant where the structure is the main problem.

Scope and handoff

Renters, owners and property managers

For a rental or managed property, contact the responsible manager as soon as the situation allows. Confirm who can authorize repairs, what hardware must be retained and who will receive new keys. A contractor cannot settle a disagreement about who owes the repair cost.

Keep the damaged parts available if the owner, insurer or investigating authority requests them. Ask before discarding anything that may be needed for documentation. An itemized invoice can distinguish entry, emergency securing, replacement hardware and follow-up work without promising that an insurance policy will reimburse any particular charge.

What affects the repair quote

The door material, extent of damage, hardware design and availability of suitable parts all matter. The quote should identify the immediate work and any later repair that remains. If the technician cannot judge concealed damage until a component is removed, discuss how a revised scope will be approved.

Access to the property also matters. In an Austin apartment building, arrange the building entry and the authorized contact; at a house, keep the damaged area clear for the assessment. Tell dispatch if the entrance is your only usable route so the plan can account for people coming and going safely.

Check the opening before the handoff

After the agreed work, check ordinary closing, locking and inside operation with the technician. The door should not depend on an improvised push, lift or extra device to perform the agreed function. Ask which keys work, what parts changed and whether any temporary limitation remains.

Common questions

Answers before you call.

Can you make the door secure the same day?

The condition of the opening, suitable parts and technician availability determine what can be completed. Explain whether it can close now. The proposed plan should distinguish any immediate securing measure from a permanent door or frame repair.

Should I replace every lock after a burglary?

Not automatically. Assess the damaged opening and whether keys were compromised. Other working locks may need rekeying if old keys are a concern, while untouched hardware may not need replacement. Decide from the actual access and damage issues.

Will insurance pay for the repair?

Coverage depends on the policy and circumstances. Ask the insurer about its documentation requirements and keep an itemized invoice. The locksmith cannot promise reimbursement or decide the claim.

Can a stronger deadbolt fix a split frame?

No. The supporting opening needs its own assessment and repair. Hardware selection should follow that assessment so the replacement is mounted to an appropriate, sound opening rather than hiding the damage.
