Start with the keys and doors.
512 Locksmith provides mobile lock rekeying in Jonestown. If an old key should no longer open your home or business, we can assess the existing cylinders and plan the change. Sound handles and trim can often remain when their cylinders support the new key arrangement.
Call (512) 777-0021 to discuss the doors involved and arrange the visit. Dispatch accepts calls 24/7. We serve Jonestown and the surrounding Central Texas area, with timing and the particular work confirmed individually.
Decide which old access should end
A move, a missing key or a change in who uses a property can prompt a rekey. Start by identifying every opening the old key operated. Changing only the front deadbolt may leave a side or garage-entry door on that same key.
Then decide who should receive the new keys. You may want the household to share one key while a workshop or storage space remains separate. That decision is about access, not simply reducing the number of keys you carry.
If the property is rented or managed, arrange the authorized owner's or manager's approval. An existing master key system can include access that needs to remain in place. Tell us about it before the cylinder is changed so the new arrangement fits the agreed responsibilities.
Count cylinders rather than guessing from door numbers
One door can have a keyed knob and a separate keyed deadbolt. Those are two cylinders to consider if both need changing. Another door may have a different type of lock or no separately serviceable cylinder at all.
Make a short list of the openings and the keys that still work. Include an outbuilding, a gate lock or a separate room if it belongs in the request. A padlock can have different service options from the lock mounted in a house door, so list it as its own item.
A readable model name or photograph can help identify the hardware. You do not need to disassemble it for the quote request. Describe whether the door is accessible and whether any key is currently broken or stuck.
Keyed alike and master keyed solve different problems
Keying compatible locks alike lets the same operating key open the selected doors. Anyone with a copy has that shared access. It can be a convenient household arrangement when the same people should use those openings.
A master key system can provide selected groups of access. For example, a planned owner key may open an agreed group while another key opens only assigned doors. It should follow a documented door and user plan rather than a default assumption that one person needs every opening.
The cylinders must support the requested arrangement. A matching brand or finish is not the entire compatibility check. We can explain whether existing locks can be serviced together, whether selected parts need replacement or whether separate keys are the practical choice.
Keep repairs separate from the key change
Rekeying changes the key accepted by a compatible cylinder. It does not repair a damaged latch, straighten a door or correct every closing fault. Tell us if you have to lift or pull the door hard before the key turns.
We can assess door repair alongside the rekey. The two jobs may be done during the same appointment, but the scope should say what each accomplishes. Replacement can be appropriate when the hardware is damaged or cannot provide the requested function.
If retaining a particular handle or finish matters, make that part of the discussion. A compatible cylinder change may preserve it, while another repair may need a different component. Ask what would change before approving permanent work.
A physical rekey does not remove digital users
If a lock has both a keypad and a serviceable keyhole, it has more than one form of entry. Changing the cylinder does not delete a code or phone permission. Removing an app user does not stop an unchanged physical key from working.
Review both during a handover. The owner should control the administrator account and understand how temporary access is issued or ended. We can discuss smart-lock options if the goal includes a new entry method, while keeping that separate from the existing mechanical key change.
A shared community credential or driveway remote is another item again. Involve the responsible administrator rather than assuming a house rekey changes every access device on the property.
Agree on the handover before the appointment ends
Ask for the proposed scope to identify the cylinders included, the new key quantities and any retained authorized access. Check the supplied keys in their intended openings with the doors open and closed, and confirm the old-key access has changed as agreed.
For a Jonestown address off the FM 1431 area, arrange any controlled entrance needed to reach the work. If the gate itself has failed, mention that when booking rather than treating it as part of a routine house rekey.

Bring the lock details you have.
A clear photo of the lock, keyway or model label can help frame the conversation before a visit.
Can you rekey a lock without an existing working key?
A missing key does not automatically rule it out. The cylinder design, condition and whether the door is accessible affect the work. Tell us what remains and whether entry is needed, so the proposed scope includes more than the planned key change if necessary.
Should every exterior door receive the same key?
That depends on who should use each door. A shared key is convenient for some households, while a separate space may need different access. We can assess cylinder compatibility after you decide which openings should be grouped together.
Can I keep a manager's authorized key working?
Tell us about the existing arrangement before the rekey. A compatible master key system may be planned to retain selected authorized access while changing an individual operating key. The responsible owner or manager should approve the intended result.
Does rekeying change the lock's strength?
A rekey primarily changes physical key access. It does not upgrade the door, frame or the original lock's construction. If the concern is damage or a different security function, ask for those needs to be assessed separately from the key change.
